Indian Diaspora and Its Global Influence

 

 

1. The Indian diaspora includes Indian citizens and people of Indian origin living outside India, either temporarily or permanently.

2. India has the world’s largest overseas population, with approximately 35 million people of Indian origin living across more than 200 countries.

3. Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) are Indian citizens who ordinarily reside outside India for employment, education, business or other purposes.

4. Overseas Citizens of India (OCIs) are foreign citizens of Indian origin who receive certain immigration and economic benefits in India.

5. OCI status is not dual citizenship. OCI cardholders cannot vote, contest elections, hold constitutional offices or purchase agricultural land in India.

6. The Person of Indian Origin (PIO) and OCI card schemes were merged in 2015, creating a single OCI framework.

7. During the colonial period, Indian indentured labourers, commonly known as Girmitiyas, were taken to places such as Mauritius, Fiji, Guyana, Suriname, Trinidad and other Caribbean territories.

8. Between the 1950s and 1980s, many Indian doctors, engineers, scientists and other professionals migrated to the United States, United Kingdom and Western Europe.

2. Non-Resident Indian (NRI)

An Indian citizen who ordinarily resides outside India for employment, education, business or other purposes. An NRI continues to hold Indian citizenship and an Indian passport.

 

3. Overseas Citizen of India (OCI)

A foreign citizen of Indian origin who receives lifelong multiple-entry access to India and certain economic and educational benefits. OCI status is not dual citizenship and does not provide voting rights.

 

4. Girmitiyas

Indian indentured labourers taken during the colonial period to plantations in Mauritius, Fiji, Guyana, Suriname, Trinidad and other territories. The term originated from the word “agreement.”

 

5. Remittances

Money transferred by overseas Indians to their families or other recipients in India. Remittances support household income, consumption and India’s balance of payments.

 

6. Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD)

An event observed on 9 January to strengthen engagement between India and its overseas community. The date marks Mahatma Gandhi’s return from South Africa to India in 1915.
